In severe muscular spasm sedatives are not always effective unless it is used in sufficiently high dosage so as to cause unconsciousness, which is not needed because it interferes with nutrition and the vegetative functions and furthermore, the respiratory slowing accompanying the use of these drugs is dangerous in the tetanus patient who at best can only take shallow breaths because of chest rigidity.

Sedation to the point of respiratory and cough reflex depression also invites atelectasis and insium sulfate is limited in usefulness by the fact that one is obliged to stop short of accomplishing peak relaxation with it, again because of the fear of too much respiratory depression.
SEVERE MUSCULAR SPASM AND THE FEAR OF PARALYZING RESPIRATION
The relaxant effects of curare and the tranquilizing drugs are effectively utilized in some cases, the latter having the advantage over curare of controlling muscle spasm without paralyzing respiration.
