Loss of appetite and weight can lead to deteriorating health. In most cases, doctors and families are often frus­trated when they try to help the patient. However, a recent article in Postgraduate Medicine (85, 3:140) says that loss of appetite, also known as anorexia, can usually be traced to physical or social problems and can often be alleviated.

Even sore tooth can cause the lack of appetite and eventual weight loss, according to the study. Doctors Cynthia Olscn-Noll and Michael Bosworth of Wright State University School of Medicine co-authored the study.

As soon as weight loss or loss of appetite has been identified, a thorough physical exam should be carried out to see if a medical problem is the cause,- the doctors  recommend.

The medical problems that the study linked to loss of appetite include the following:

• Peptic ulcer disease,
• Intestinal obstruction,
• Gallstones,
• Stomach reflux,
• Stomach cancer,
  delayed emptying of the esophagus, or spasms of the
  esophagus.
• Absence of teeth and poor-fitting
  dentures can result in the avoidance of solid foods,- the
  researchers explain.
• Toothache,
• Sensitive teeth, o
• Poor dental hygiene can also affect the appetite and e.g., the amount of food an elderly person will eat.
• Emphysema,
  • Heart failure,
  • Chronic bronchitis.
  • Hypothyroidism,
  • uremia,
  • Neoplasm (unusual new tissue growth which

could be cancerous) or liver problems.

Prescription and over-the-counter drugs can also affect the appetite;

Lcvodopa (brand names Dopar and Larodopa) and digitalis (digoxin or Lanoxin) are two drugs especially implicated in appetite suppression, the authors warn. Overse-dation by psychotropics, abuse of over-the-counter laxatives or appetite suppressants,

• Thiazide diuretics,
• Antibiotics,
• Sedatives,
• Narcotics and some other drugs are implicated well.
• Nutritional problems and education should not be over­looked.

Often, physicians prescribe dietary restrictions (like low-salt, high-fiber, and low-fat diet) without adequately evaluat­ing the patient’s ability to understand and prepare the diet or find suitable substitutions for favorite foods, the study says.

Vitamin a deficiency

• Night blindness or loss of vision in near darkness is the earliest symptom of a vitamin A deficiency.
• A severe defi­ciency of vitamin A may cause exophthalmia (dry eyes) and can lead to permanent blindness if the eye tissue becomes ulcerated, researchers said.
